Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally; these are the collection of diseases which alter the structure and/or function of the heart & blood vessels these include Arrhythmias, Congenital heart diseases, Heart attack, Heart failure, Cardiomyopathy, Valvular heart disease, Stroke, Pericardial disease, Vascular disease etc.
Cardiac rehabilitation is a complex inter-professional intervention that is customized to individual patients having various cardiovascular diseases.
WHAT IS THE AIM OF CARDIAC REHABILITATION PROGRAMME?
The aim of CRP is to limit the psychological & physiological stresses caused by cardiovascular disorders & also to reduce the risk of mortality caused by heart conditions. This also helps a heart patient in improving the overall cardiac function which helps the patients in living their life with the highest possible quality.
In CRP, a multidisciplinary team of health professionals are encouraged to support the heart patient in achieving & maintaining the optimal physical as well as the psychological health.
WHAT DOES CARDIAC REHABILITATION INVOLVE?
Cardiac rehab has three equally important parts, these are:
EXERCISE COUNSELLING & TRAINING – Exercise helps in better pumping of the heart & also for proper working of the cardiovascular system. In general, it promotes the overall health of your heart.
EDUCATION FOR HEALTHY LIVING OF A HEART – Educating a heart patient is the key element in a cardiac rehab programme. This part of CRP includes education regarding management of risk factors, healthy lifestyle changes & proper nutrition choices etc.
COUNSELLING TO REDUCE STRESS – This part of CRP helps the heart patient in identifying the sources of stress & how he / she can tackle these as prolonged stress can hurt your heart.
